With a cast of Sydney’s sexiest musicians, a bump ‘n’ grind of burlesque beauties, and a scorching soundtrack straight from the west coast of 1950s USA, Little Egypt’s Burlesque is the excuse Sydney’s been looking for to truly let it’s hair down. And from 21 – 23 January they’re set to sizzle onstage at The Basement, Sydney.
The aim of creative director Lucian McGuiness is for the audience to truly imbibe the experience – to feel like they awoke in Jerry Leiber’s body in an LA club in 1952, watching Big Mama Thornton sing, surrounded by his buddies, whiskey in hand. “I was looking for a way to show everyone else what I saw and felt; that modern club dance-floor hits are riffing on sexy songs from half a century ago. In the end I developed the theatrical burlesque take on a Rhythm’n’Blues revue for Sydney Fringe Festival in 2010”
Steering clear of proscriptive musical and theatrical experiences, the show has been hand crafted with songs that are chosen for their ability to inspire the most powerful performances – Little Egypt’s Burlesque is as much of a revelation for the cast of characters making and interpreting the music, as for those experiencing it.
Choreography and theatre add to the impact, giving the audience permission to be as involved as they long to be, and the performers the chance to revel in the inherent sensuality of the music.
And McGuiness is delighted to be bringing the show back for Sydney audiences. “Our audiences get a bit of everything: the Lieber & Stoller numbers are quite literally 2 minute stage plays, there’s dance lessons, and rip-roaring performances of the best songs you didn’t know you knew, made larger than life by live burlesque, and the most characterful, soulful singers in town.”
